VG Training Academy provides Webinars – Science, Safety, and a PHC Apprenticeship
Curriculum. The Webinars are for anyone in the Arboricultural Community that is
striving to become an arborist, the arborist who needs CEUs, the CTSP that needs
safety CEUs, or the arborist who would like to seek more knowledge.

Jeff Thierbach

Instructor in Science and Safety Education

Jeff brings over 35 years of experience in the green industry. He began his career with a national tree care company before founding Victorian Gardens Tree Care in 1995. His extensive background spans plant health care (PHC), arboricultural climbing, consulting, utility work, and safety management. Throughout his career, Jeff has pursued ongoing professional development through college coursework, numerous industry credentials, and attendance at conferences across the United States. He has served as an instructor for organizations including TCIA, ACRT, ISA Michigan, and Victorian Gardens, where he has taught a wide range of topics within the green industry. Jeff has also demonstrated leadership within the industry, serving multiple times as Chair of the Michigan Tree Climbing Competition. A proud U.S. Navy veteran and former search and rescue diver, he is deeply committed to giving back to the veteran community. He has served as a site leader for Saluting Branches for the past 10 years. In recent years, Jeff has held roles as a Safety Director, contributed to storm response efforts with OSR, and worked as an instructor, supporting industry education through webinars.  

Dawn Thierbach

Developer of Science and Safety Webinars

Dawn brings over 30 years of experience in the green industry, beginning her career in 1990. She started as a legal consultant for Victorian Gardens Tree Care before earning an associate degree in ornamental horticulture and obtaining numerous credentials in arboriculture. Her career has included leadership and service roles across the industry. Dawn has served as a board member of ISA Michigan and worked with TCIA as a Regional Outreach Coordinator. She has also demonstrated her commitment to the profession by serving multiple times as Chair of the Michigan Tree Climbing Competition. Dawn is deeply committed to community service and veteran support. She has served as a site leader for Saluting Branches for the past 10 years, a role that holds personal significance given her family’s military background—her father served for 21 years, and her husband is also a veteran. In recent years, Dawn has applied her extensive expertise in plant health care (PHC), climbing, consulting, and safety to develop and deliver educational webinars for VG Training Academy and Victorian Gardens.  

Steve Martinko

Steve is a graduate of Michigan State University and has been an International Society of Arboriculture Certified Arborist® for more than 22 years. During his time at MSU, he held a work-study position as a research lab assistant within the Institute of Agricultural Technology, where he gained hands-on experience with research protocols and methodology.  With over 37 years in the green industry, Steve brings a depth of knowledge spanning field operations, plant health care (PHC), and business strategy. In 2008, he and his wife, Theresa, founded Contender’s Tree & Lawn, where Theresa now leads day-to-day operations. Over the past 16 years, Steve has refined his expertise from sales to high-level PHC business development, contributing to the company’s sustained growth and success.  Building on that success, Steve and Theresa acquired Banner Sales and Consulting in 2020, expanding their impact within the industry. Today, Steve is passionate about mentoring arborists and business owners, helping them thrive in an evolving landscape where biological solutions are increasingly critical. He currently serves as past Chairman of the Michigan Green Industry Association.
